Why Do We Wear Makeup?

I thought that a perfect entry post to this blog would be a little rant covering my thoughts and feelings about makeup. After all, I have been passionate about makeup since I was a little girl. This passion grew over the years and eventually sparked my interest in the world of YouTube beauty gurus. My teenage years were not spent playing high school sports or going to parties. Instead, I spent this time creating a name for myself in this online community. Seven years later, I have over 100,000 subscribers and 23 million video views. If that has not convinced you that I have quite an interest in makeup, then I don’t know what will.
So I suppose now I should move on to exactly how I feel about the judgements placed on women for wearing makeup. It is a topic I see being debated quite often and so I feel that it needs to be addressed.
Women are faced with pressures to “look their best” every day. Modern media surrounds us with images of unrealistic beauty and the photoshopped faces of models. These images become so constant, that we are forced to give in to the vicious cycle of trying to achieve perfection. From a young age, we are taught that wearing makeup is a way to cover up what makes us less “beautiful” in the eyes of society. So as much as we may be told to wear makeup throughout our lives, there is a newer pressure on women to not be “fake.” Judgements are constantly placed on women who wear makeup. They are blamed for tricking others or lying about their true appearance. So essentially there is no winning when it comes to trying to achieve today’s standard of beauty.
I love wearing makeup. The act of getting ready in the morning is what makes me who I am. I believe that makeup is not only a form of self-expression but also a way to build self-confidence. Makeup should not be used to cover up flaws but instead to enhance the beauty that already exists within a person. It is amazing what just one touch of mascara or a little lipstick can do. It is also amazing what talented makeup artists like the woman in the photo can do. So whether it is just a tad bit of makeup or a full face, it is important to realize how beautiful you are without any of it. The best possible thing you can do for yourself is to go makeup-less when ever you feel comfortable doing so. The more often you go out without makeup on, the easier it will get. You may even start to realize that you are your harshest critic.
So whether you wear makeup to meet the expectations of society or just to brighten up your face for a special event, stop caring about what others think. Live for yourself and believe that you are beautiful. Because confidence is the best makeup product on the market.
